This year my daughter found something to get me out of the hotel. Her, her boyfriend and I went off for some bourbon tastings
She had asked me about it earlier when she was getting ready to make reservations, we ended up going to 3 distilleries.

The first stop was Stitzel-Weller Distillery.
Nice looking place. This was just a tasting, no tour. It was also a
chocolate pairing. (which ended up being the theme of the day because
my daughter, like me, enjoys chocolate)
We had three samples. The best thing I can say about this one was the
buttered rum caramel was amazing. The actual pairing didn't do much for
me. The chocolate and bourbon kind of cancel each other out for me.
The chocolate completely removes the finish, which is the part I most enjoy.

Next up was Angels Envy
This was a tour and a tasting. Fancy place downtown. Had a big fancy
showroom with lots of merch to buy.The tour was cool, though it would
have been cooler if they would have actually been producing stuff.
They had just gotten a brand new bottling machine and were still
setting it up.But we got to see the tanks and learn how they mix
everything. They even gave everyone a sample of the corn mash. Not
nearly as gross as it looked.
The tasting was pretty good. They had three samples for us.I don't
remember what they were. I know the first one was meh. The second was
not bad. The last one was pretty darn good. The chocolate was
forgettable.
But they did let us keep one of the glasses. A nice bonus.

By now, we were getting hungry. We decided to try a local place
Troll Pub Under The Bridge
Cool looking place, that is actually next to a bridge and is below
street level. The ambiance was great. The food was very good, and the
servings were huge.
I got the poutine. It wasn't real poutine, but it was excellent.
House cut fries covered with roast beef and gravy smothered in a beer
cheese.
I couldn't finish it all.

Our last stop was Buzzard's Roost
My favorite by far. This was just a tasting at another place downtown.
We got 4 samples this time. Two bourbons and two ryes. The first
bourbon was ok, but the second was delicious. And I really loved both
the ryes. To top it off, the gentleman leading the tasting kept giving
us more in our glasses.
The spiced dark chocolate was amazing! The caramel was great too.
Again, the actual parings did nothing for me. The chocolate and bourbon
canceled each other out, but this tasting actually got me to notice
some different notes in the ryes. Nothing huge, but I did actually get
some real flavors I could identify.
Normally I am a 'this is good, or this is bad' kind of guy.
