Haunted Mansion model kit  Polar Lights reissue

I have been wanting to build this kit for more than 40 years.
I had one when I was a kid, in the 70's. Of course, I couldn't figure out how to make it work and was too impatient to wait for my dad to get home from work, like my mother told me to do. So, I glued the arms in place. Shortly after that, the instructions 'clicked' for me and I realized how to make it work. But by then it was too late. I got the arms back off, but I couldn't get enough of the glue off to get the arms to work properly. Ever since then, I have wanted another one to be able to build a fully functional one.
Of course, my parents wouldn't buy me another one. And by the time I got back into models in the mid 90's and got online in late 99, they were super expensive. I got a mostly complete built one that didn't work that I intended to rebuild, but never got around to.

Then Round2 finally reissued it!
I was all over that reissue. I got it just before Memorial Day weekend of 2020. I knew I wanted to do a fun quick build, and I wanted to incorporate the glow-in-the-dark plastic. So, with the long weekend coming up, I set a goal of doing the whole kit, from start to finish in one long weekend.

And I did!
And this one, is fully funtional

And yes it does glow in the dark!

Can't believe it took me another 8 months to take finished photos and put the page together.
Had a very busy summer/fall/winter with tons of mandatory overtime at work, and lots of projects around the house to finish up.
The build process

Friday after work, I cut the celophane and got started.

Trimming parts and gluing sub-assemblies.

More gluing, and some basecoating

Some main assemblies

Getting there, but taking longer than hoped.
More basecoating done.
The red and yellow look a bit garrish at this point, but they will be toned down soon.

This might look like crap right now, but it is actually coming along very nicely.
The lid has the second coat which was gray while the casket itself just has the first coat of brown on it.

Base coating some of the smaller assemblies.

Executioner base coated.
Base pretty much done

4:30 Monday morning
Last thing I did was get the executioner masked off, then I shot all the bare skin areas with flesh

Told you all those nasty looking layers would come together.
Yellow makes a great base-color for woodgrain.

A look at more progress.
Detailing on the executioner, the skeleton, and the dude sitting on the casket.

Casket detailed out, and final gluing.

With the interior done, and the skeleton in place.

And finally done, on Tuesday night.
Still technically part of my long weekend, as I had scheduled a vacation day for Tuesday to make it a 4-day-weekend.

The glow is awesome!

DONE!
Oh yeah. Little word of advice.
If you want to try to lubricate things to make
them work more smoothly.
Stick with silicone spray.
Dry lubricant just makes a big white
powdery mess.

And, the aftermath.
I really need to clean up my bench after this.
