Mayfield - 15th. Way better day

Mayfield
primed for Darlington By JIM McLAURIN Staff
Writer
Darlington -- The two happiest guys in town Tuesday
were Darlington Raceway president Andrew Gurtis and Winston Cup
driver Jeremy Mayfield.
Mayfield, because his two-day test
session for the Mountain Dew Southern 500 was going so well that he
says he might have his best shot at a Darlington win on Sunday,
Sept. 1. Gurtis, because there will be a good crowd to see Mayfield
give it a go.

Re:

Great article McLeod! Thanx. You know I've been getting down on the
19 lately, but that kind of article makes me feel hopeful. I'm glad
to hear that he's happier than at Penske. Plus he did better than
expected last week. Jeremy always seems to run well at Darlington.
He's even running the Mountain Dew paint scheme on the Dodge
probably so hopefully that'll be some more good magic. It was
interesting to hear his advice from Cale on turns 1 & 2. Those
are hairy turns. The ones that put the "stripe" in your Darlington
experience. It's weird to have such a tough track be one that you do
well on. Ward Burton does well there, too. On my NASCAR sim on my
computer I usually do well there, too. It's a mentally draining
track, but if you're set up right you can kill there. It was so
disappointing a couple years back when he had such a great car there
and was leading and wrecked trying to lap Dave Marcis. They came
back from commercial break and showed his wasted car limping back to
the pits.
You're always driving in traffic there and passing is always tough.
Hopefully the testing will pay off. I should be watching that one
down at my brother's house in Virginia.

Somehow races like the Pop Secret Microwave Popcorn 400

Joe Nemechek 5. Johnny Benson 6. Mike Wallace 7. Hut
Stricklin 8. Matt Kenseth 9. Jeff Green 10. Ward Burton
17. Jeremy Mayfield And, ouch: 42. Dale Jr.

So Jeff Gordon finally wins again. It just wouldn't be a proper

at the end. Didn't think he was going to. Gave Rusty a little bit of
what got the #2 to the front earlier. Thought he might bitch about
it, but he didn't, to his credit. "Just racin' I guess". Made for a
great finish.
Some hot tempers were directed at both Junior
and Mayfield tonight as well as many others. I would give the
Unnamed One the benefit of the doubt on his if he wasn't bumping
Johnson all around on the pace laps before the restart
incident.
Great third place for Junior. Crappy days for

Hahaha, Ward Burton throwing his little heel protectors at

Ward's got nice aim, it was a good shot! And I liked when Eilliott

And I couldn't figure out if Jimmy Johnson was flipping off the

Overall, it was a fun race. The always are at Bristol,

From The State newspaper (Columbia, SC) http://www.thestate.com/mld/state/2002/08/30/sports/3968237.htm At
the Track JIM MCLAURIN, Staff Writer
Fairy tale stuff.
Ward Burton wrecks his car in qualifying for last year's Mountain
Dew Southern 500, spends all night helping his crew put it back
together, and wins the big race on Sunday. Will Burton or somebody
else write that kind of script this weekend? At Darlington, you
never know.
MAC'S TOP 10
They want to run the Southern
500 on Saturday night?! Let's nip this one in the bud. The top 10
reasons that idea should be buried alongside NASCAR's "L-R street
series."
TEN Check your solunar tables: In 2005, the race
would be under a full moon.
NINE Local motels won't blink
on the three-night minimum.
EIGHT Spencer's coffee-jolt
has worn off.
SEVEN NASCAR officials can't see during the
daytime!
SIX Give the crowd the whole day to get likkered
up? Hah!
FIVE Try to picture the 2 a.m. run on the Waffle
House. It won't be pretty.
FOUR With 10 to go, Myrtle
tells Fred: "C'mon, you sot. We got Sunday School at nine
o'clock."
THREE Casey Atwood's mom not likely to extend
his curfew.
TWO Yeah. Like the Highway Patrol needs the
business on Saturday night.
ONE Hey, if it was such a
great idea, Harold Brasington would have lit up the joint in
1950!

to take home the hardware in the Funai 250.
"He was the
dominant car and definitely deserved to win. I couldn't run with

Those cards in

Provisional
land???????????????????????????????
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ah, who am I kidding?? He hates NHIS, it doesn't really
surprise me he's near the back.
Oh well, he always seems to have some sort of bad luck in NH.
Hopefully this race'll be different.

Still hanging around. Oh, hell, I'll start watching the Nascars,
since Michael Shoemaker (err, make that Schumacher) is just so damn
supreme in Formula1...

Re: The NASCAR Lounge
If you really don't want a Bud (I know, I know. I do
remember! "It's like making love in a rowboat."
)......here's a Jack Daniels for you! We do have all sorts of
alcoholic beverages...something of which I know nothing about, oh
no...
Anywho, the race is on a rain delay. Rain delay's can be
really fun when they get the drivers to act silly, but they can be
pretty long, too. Ha! My baby's crew chief Tony Eury Sr. just got
the "Golden Benny".
HA! They wanna keep the trophy but Benny Parsons says they can't,
but Tony Sr and Tony Jr won't give it up! Oh, rain delay is almost
over!

Re: The NASCAR Lounge
Sorry I was out of the lounge during the race. i was busy doing
some music making on the computer rather than BNing during the race.
I made a nice 2 disc set of Sinatra from discs borrowed from my Dad.
Does that make me officially old now? I always think fondly of my
Dad whenever I hear Sinatra or Glenn Miller, so I like them
both.
But I watched. During the rain delay they went inside
the Dew Crew's tent and did the joke of opening up Evernham's book
with the front page saying "I AM THE MAN" all over, with Jeremy
backing off and waving his hands like HE had nothing to do with it.
You had to be there, but it was a funny moment and Jeremy is so
infrequently on TV. Rain delays are good for the time they spend
with the drivers and crew members. You really get to see them as
people instead of helmets inside of numbered steel cars.
So
the result was rather BLAH for me. I was hoping that Penske would go
winless this year but it was really only a matter of time before
Newman won. I don't have anything against him as such although he is
a little bland. It was touching how emotional his father was about
the win.
Junior made it to 11th. Pretty good.
Bill & Jeremy fell back to 23rd & 24th.
They needed longer runs to be affective.
Next week I'm going
to be at the race in Dover.
